Simple EPR

The development of packaging EPR continues with the appointment of a scheme administrator to manage fees and investment.
The UK’s new Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (pEPR) has officially launched, with PackUK established as the scheme administrator. This is a major step forwards in the implementation of EPR.
Â
PackUK is tasked with setting fees, collecting them from obligated producers, and funding local recycling efforts. By doing so, it aims to provide value for money for producers while improving recycling infrastructure and public awareness. A key objective is to modernise the UK’s approach to packaging waste, aligning it with best practices from around the world.
Â
pEPR is based on the "polluter pays" principle, ensuring that businesses using and supplying packaging bear the costs of managing packaging waste, relieving taxpayers and local authorities of this burden. Over the next decade, the scheme is expected to drive a £10 billion investment in recycling services. This investment will fund local recycling initiatives and public awareness campaigns to promote proper packaging disposal.
Â
"The implementation of the pEPR scheme is a critical step towards the creation of a circular economy. Together the packaging reforms will stimulate investment in recycling infrastructure and create green jobs, alongside being key to delivering Net Zero."
Â
The introduction of PackUK as the scheme administrator for the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging is anticipated to bring greater clarity and efficiency to compliance processes for producers. This new organisation has the potential to reduce administrative burdens, provide clearer guidance on reporting requirements, and ensure that producers can focus on meeting their obligations effectively within a well-defined framework.
